1971’, LS6 optioned, Ontario Orange, Corvette
coupe.
This is a Corvette with a unique history, and lots
of documentation.
The 1971 Corvette RPO LS6 engine option was the
last time that GM offered a solid lifter, aluminum
head, big block in the Corvette. This model
represents the sunset of the C3 Corvette
performance era. Many Corvette enthusiasts refer
to the LS6 option as ”Duntov’s last stand”, and
for good reason. The 9:0 to 1 compression ratio
454, could still pound out an amazing 425 HP
rating, and Car Craft Magazine proved Duntov’s
point, by belting out a 12.64 second time-slip at
southern California’s OCIR dragstrip when the car
was just a few weeks old. That kind of performance
is no surprise if you know that the LS6 shared the
same open chamber aluminum heads (074 castings) as
the legendary ZL1 and the late 69’ L88’s.
This Corvette is the first known LS6 built out of
the estimated 188 produced. VIN # 10931
This Corvette was a Chevrolet “press fleet” car in
1971, hence, the early VIN #
One of the first magazines to test this Corvette,
was Car & Driver magazine. A staff writer,
accompanied by Zora Arkus Duntov, tested the car
for a June, 1971 write-up. A copy of this magazine
goes with the car.
The last magazine to test this Corvette, was Car
Craft. That test appeared in the August, 1971
issue. Ro McGonegal, Steve Collison, & Larry
Shrieb bolted on headers and 4.56 gears to come up
with an amazing 12.64 @ 114mph time- |
